As the New Year unfolds it may be important for all of us, you and me, to look back for just a few seconds to remember that the ordinariness of life is what really gives Christmas its true meaning. It is about two ordinary people, Mary and Joseph. They followed God’s call to be parents of an extraordinary human baby. It resulted in an encounter with the Divine. It is about incarnation, God with us in the ordinary moments, hours, days of our ordinary lives.

So, in 2012, I pray that you, too, will have an encounter with the Divine in your own ordinary life. I can guarantee it won’t come in a burning bush, a flash of light or with a singing multitude of angels.

It will be born in the ordinariness of life as you take down the tree, put away your presents, wash the dishes, go back to work or place food in the Circle of Concern basket. It may be in the smile of a stranger, a teardrop or a song. God will come to you when you finally lie down at the end of a long day.

God is like that, coming to us in the ordinary. In this New Year may you discover God hanging out with you.
